Got Rizz?
My sixteen year old son is a real hit with the ladies right now. He has been described as a “snack” which is a bit disconcerting to me as his mom. I feel like it was just last Wednesday I was teaching him to tie his shoes.
He frequents the gym to keep his washboard abs from rusting while also working a landscaping job that keeps his acorn brown tan in perfect order. He recently said to me, with a gleaming smile created by his orthodontist and his parent’s money, “I’m the Rizzlord.”
As a mother of ten children, I know that teenage slang words change daily, if not hourly, but I try to keep current. I asked him, “What is this Rizz you are the Lord of?”
Quick etymology lesson. Google defines etymology as, “The study of the history and origin of words, including how they developed their current meanings and how they changed over time.“
This writer LOVES etymology, especially when it comes from slang words.
Rizz, noun. ‘The gift or ability to charm a potential love interest. Abbreviation for ‘charisma.’
‘Charisma’ –> ‘Rizz’ –> ‘Rizzlord.’ You still with me?
Checkmate to my son. By that definition, he is the Rizzlord. Also, the Rizzler, the Rizzly Bear, the Rizzard of Oz.
But what if I told you that being a Rizzlord ( or lady) isn’t limited to being physically attractive, young, or ‘snack’ level fit?
Our modern definition of charisma is ‘a special magnetic charm or appeal.’ However, charisma was originally used in Christian contexts to refer to a gift or power bestowed by the Holy Spirit for the good of the church. Charisma comes from the Greek verb, ‘charizesthai,’ which means, ‘to favor.’ Literally, charisma was a gift from God to be used for God.
The apostle Paul wrote in the book of Romans verses 6 -8, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”
When you use your gift ( your charisma) to glorify God and benefit the church, you have a special magnetic charm or appeal. You draw people to Jesus when you use your charisma, your gift, in service to His church.
So – what’s your Rizz? Prophecy, serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leading, showing mercy?
Dear reader, use the gifts the Holy Spirit has given you and bless the church. Thankfully, you don’t need to have washboard abs, a tan or a megawatt smile. =)
You can still show off your Rizz.
